Shots Espresso Bar is located on Hay St in the CBD (East side); its a hidden cafe which I think a lot of people don’t know about. I always walked past it back to work after lunch/bubble tea in the city, I was always intrigued to see what it was all about.
The eyecatching chalkboard menu is placed outside listed with tasty specials ranging from around $10 to $15. Seems like a reasonable price?

The Food Engineers walked into the establishment and it took some time for NL and myself to figure out what we want. Finally we ordered a Club Sandwich, Steak Sandwich and Penne with Chorizo, Olives, Spinch, Capsicum in a Tomato Sauce.
ST decided to try out an Iced Coffee; it looked like an average iced coffee with icecream (no cream), but damn, it was nice. ST quite enjoyed it as well – “not sweet but refreshing”. It wasn’t one of those watered down powdered coffee concoctions with a mound of cream, but rather had a nice stong coffee with a smooth nutty flavour, not too sweet. It was quite nice.
While we waited for the mains to arrive, I couldn’t help but stare at the delicious Salmon Salad another customer was having on the table next to us, next time when I’m feeling healthy I’ll give it a try.
The mains came out in about 10 minutes (quite fast I must say)…

-
Steak Sandwich – Fillet steak, caramelised onion and salad with a spicy ketchup
-
Club Sandwich – Chicken, onion, bacon and salad with a mayo sauce
-
Penne with Chorizo, Olives, Spinch, Capsicum in a Tomato Sauce.
The verdict…
Iced Coffee
ST - Great SUPER refreshing drink, could do with some choc sprinkles though
Rating - 4/5
Steak Sandwich
NL - I liked the idea about the healthy linseed bread, but the taste was ordinary. The steak was a bit on the bland side, didn’t really excite me but overall was an average meal.
Rating - 3/5
Club Sandwich
ST - The sandwich was a bit on the dry side but overall a nice simple average lunch. Nothing much to brag about.
Rating - 3/5
Penne with Chorizo, Olives, Spinch, Capsicum in a Tomato Sauce
STq - I was quite suprised that I ended up finishing the whole dish! It was light and tasty, but I did need quite a bit of cracked pepper to create more depth in the dish. It was a fresh dish, the sauce sort of tasted a bit like canned tomatos. The parmesan on the side was just too little and was rubbery once melted over the pasta. I don’t think top notch ingrediants were used, but like ST mentioned, was a nice simple average lunch.
Rating - 3.5/5
In conclusion…
There wasn’t much choice in the cafe for food, but then again its an espresso bar. Though I admit that their coffee seems to be quite nice, guess you can’t be perfect at everything.
Overall we give…
Rating - 3.4/5
