The George is a stylish venue located at the upper end of St Georges Terrace in the CBD, in a building called the London House which comprises of a restaurant, bar, champagne lounge, function room and a courtyard It is quite a new establishment and was opened by Melburnians (as informed in the newspaper) which explains the chic and sophisticated look of the place, catering nicely to the local corporate clientele.
Stepping into the restaurant for lunch, I was in the first instance very impressed with the set-up of the place, its high chocolate chairs matched with marble tables, a huge metal French chandelier as the centre piece and lounge area on the side: the place exudes elegance and style (check out the website for more pictures of the place).

We looked at the menu next and found that for lunch, the choices are quite limited with only nine items on the menu to choose from (common in an upmarket cafe), however their cocktail/drinks menu are very extensive, pages and pages of them!

We decided on the following:
- Linguini with chilli, cherry tomato, anchovies, parsley – $17
- Rocket, pumpkin, goat cheese and toasted pine nut salad – $18
- Grilled chicken and avocado salad, chardonnay vinaigrette – $18

The food came out promptly, a plus during lunch hour rush. I was a bit skeptical about the linguini as I do not like the sound of anchovies in the dish but it turned out exceptional, the anchovies blended well into the sauce that you almost couldn’t taste it. The cherry tomato was an excellent addition to the pasta as it added a sweet flavour to the sauce. With the salads, you’d know that they have used very fresh produce – they tasted light and came out looking very appetising. Overall, it was a very nice meal. The only thing to be wary of is the small serving, not absolutely satisfying if you have a big appetite. Prices in the lunch menu range from $10 – $22.
Service was excellent as well – they came numerous time to top up our water glasses, very friendly and polite whilst taking our order and cleared the table promptly after we finish.
On the same week, we also went for Friday night drinks and the place was jam packed! I had to wait in line for 20mins before squeezing in to the crowded bar with hardly any place to stand. This must be the place to be for after work drinks.
