Monza is a modern and stylish cafe located in the heart of Leederville on Oxford Street.  This was our second choice to dine after being told by a packed cafe down the road that they have stopped serving their breakfast menu, and on top of that, much to our dismayed stomachs, that there was a half an hour wait before they could take any lunch order.  Not to be disappointed though, we wondered down the road and found Monza, with an all day breakfast menu, 9am – 5pm every Saturday and Sunday (I wish all cafes had all day breakfast menu!).

‘Monza’ is a city of northern Italy north-northeast of Milan and is an ancient capital of Lombardy – so when one walks into a cafe named such, one would expect all things italian inside, instead, we found a cafe with a distinct Manhattan style design with overhanging white and red lantern lights, stylish paintings and leather-like sitting couches.  The cafe was quite empty (similar to time I went for dinner there one night) which always made me wonder why?

For breakfast that day, we ordered the following:

  • Drinks - Iced Coffee, Latte, Soy Mocha
  • Vegetarian Breakfast - which consisted of two eggs as you would like with toast, wilted spinach, mushrooms, home made baked beans, avocado and oven roasted tomato
  • Cheese Omelette - aged cheddar, parmesan and feta served with tomato jam
  • Eggs Florentine - two poached eggs on sourdough toast, topped with wilted spinach and hollandaise sauce

Drinks Vegetarian Breakfast  Cheese Omelette Eggs Florentine

The coffees / mocha were quite ordinary, didn’t think much of it.  I had the Vegetarian breakfast and thought that the dish didn’t really come together taste-wise, maybe the dryness was a contributing factor - have had better breakfast elsewhere.  However, their home made baked beans were quite good.  I normally don’t eat baked beans but I finished this small plate.  The best dish out of the three was the Eggs Florentine (you can’t go wrong with hollandaise sauce!  It tastes nice with anything).  One thing I liked though is the ‘green’ sauce that came with the eggs and omelette.  It added flavour to the dishes so that they didn’t taste bland.

The service there was also quite ordinary, the waiter just took our order and left, we didn’t have much interaction with him.  Overall, I think it’s an OK place for a meal but will probably not go back too often.

  1. Monza makes a really good dinner! :) I had wanted to do a review but my pictures were not too good… glad you actually did it! I would rate their dinner at about 3.5 or 4 out of 5 btw. :)
