Chi Restaurant is located right in the middle of the busy Murray Street Mall, above Woolworths on the First Floor. It has a large dining area with contemporary design and an alfresco area overlooking the Murray St Mall (quite a nice sight). It used to be my ex-colleague’s favourite restaurant and we frequented the place often as our office was only about 8 minutes walk away. I even have a favourite dish there, the Beef Fried Noodle, which I only ever order when I go to Chi (it’s the bomb!) However, due to various reasons, we stopped going there and I haven’t been back for a couple of years.
Missing my favourite dish one day, I suggested this place for lunch to bid farewell to another one of my ex-colleague who has gone to work in Qatar. We arrived at Chi to find it fairly busy and proceeded to order our food at the counter (it’s an order & pay at counter food joint). Chi offers a wide variety of asian dishes with a Hong Kong influence including rice (such as the famous hongky style Baked Rice with Pork Chop), noodles, entrees and main dishes. Their menu board is located behind the counter and has attractive pictures of the dishes to look at for those not familiar with asian dishes. They also have a ’Special of the Day’ which is written on a chalkboard.
On this occasion, we ordered the following dishes:
- Curry Laksa
- Beef Fried Noodle (my favourite!!)
- Vegetarian Fried Noodle
- Salt & Pepper Pork Spare Ribs with Steamed Rice
Let me first tell you about the Beef Fried Noodle which I ordered again as usual. It comes with crunchy fried egg noodle (deep fried), topped with stir-fry beef and vegetables. The secret behind this dish is the sauce – it has to be thick and slightly salty to make it yummy. When the crunchy noodle is drenched in this sauce, it combines to give the perfect taste. Chi is very generous with their serving of beef and the variety of vegies (carrot, mushroom, corn and choy sum) as can be seen in the picture. I feel like eating it now as I write this! I recommended this dish to my ex-colleague but since he’s a vegetarian, he ordered the vegetarian version which was as nice but with more vegies.
My other two friends ordered the Laksa and Spare Ribs & Rice respectively and both commented that the dishes were good. I did not get to try it so no taste comments from me. From the look of the dishes, the portions were quite substantial and they were very generous with their ingredients!
Overall, Chi is a great and ideal place for a quick bite during the rush lunch hour as the food came out really fast. They also have an open kitchen so you can see what is going on in the kitchen most of the time if you are interested. I would go back there over and over again just for the Beef Fried Noodle!!
Side Note: Chi has another branch in Victoria Park which offers more variety of dishes compared to the Perth outlet as it caters for dinner as well. I’d been there a couple of times and the food there is superb. Worth a try!
