University Asian Restaurant, Nedlands

Restaurant frontView from Broadway shopping centreUniversity Asian Restaurant is located within the Broadway Fair Shopping Centre, along the same road as the University of WA.  We first heard about this restaurant through my sister’s friend who recommended for us to come here for tasty and cheap mudcrabs.  We decided to go one time and had been back occasionally since as the crabs were indeed cheaper than the other restaurants in the city/Northbridge and my parents discovered their new found favourite food there – crocodile meat!  However since last year they had stopped selling the crocodile meat dish so we haven’t been back that often.

Inside the restaurantThe restaurant itself is quite simple and looks like a typical Chinese restaurant with lots of red chinese decorations and streamers, and tables with white clothes and red napkins.  It also has a small tank of seafood showcased on the side.

One thing I must comment about this place is the restaurant owner whose name is Richard.  He is the friendliest and most attentive restaurant owner I’d encountered so far, taking time to chat to all the customers and explaining the dishes that they offer.  He even remembered us even though we haven’t been back for a good six months or so and asked where we have been which came as a surprise to me!  What good memory!

On this occasion, we had the following dishes:

  • Salt and Pepper Soft-shelled Crab - this is a nice alternative to the Salt & Pepper Spare Ribs, it was extra crunchy and you can eat the crab as a whole, delicious!
  • Richard’s Vegetarian Stack - one of their specialty dish, it consisted of layers of green vegetables, carrot and mushrooms topped with japanese tofu – another alternative to the Sizzling Japanese Tofu we always order.  It came with a thick gravy which went nicely with the steamed rice.
  • Stir-fry King Prawns with Asparagus - tasted as expected but slightly oily.
  • Sizzling Fillet Steak - big serving of tender steaks topped with broccoli, cauliflower and onions, great for the meat lovers!

We always have a good meal everytime we go for dinner here and this time is no different – although on this occasion, the service was not as good as Richard was missing and the staff did not seem to know what was going on so they took ages to take our order.  I found out later whilst paying that he had actually went out for a walk to catch some fresh air and fell asleep on the bench!  Poor guy, he must have been too tired!  Anyways he apologised for the slow service by waiving the cost of the fried ice creams we had.  What a champ!  We were quite happy that he even thought of doing that!  Great customer service!  We will definitely be back (well, I know my parents will) with such service and reasonably priced tasty dishes!

  1. Thanks for the review. I’ve tried most of the restaurants at Broadway Fair but have missed this one, think I might give it a try next time I’m down there wondering what to get for lunch!

  2. I have been meaning to try these little Asian restaurants in Nedlands – good review. Will definately give this one a crack.

  3. Ms.N Lam thank you for you kind remarks about out business. Just to inform you that we will bw shut from 21st Dec 09 till 04 Jan 10. Thank you for your(family’s)support throught out. Get ready for something snappy next year. (wink wink) MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR.

    Richard Choo.

  4. I beg to differ with your exceptional praises on this restaurant. In fact, I had an extremely bad encounter with a female staff. There is this asian staff, a girl with long yellow-dyed hair with a few ear piercings, who is extremely rude. I had a terrible experience with her due to decline of payment of my credit card. As I had used my credit card on the previous day, I doubt the card would be faulty at that point of time. I asked if another staff can help with this problem, she rudely snared at me with the question ‘don’t you have other cards?’ Besides that, she banged the machine a few times and threw my credit card on the table to display her displeasure when the payment was declined. She even scrowled at me twice! To make matters worse, she didn’t pass the order to the kitchen after payment matter was resolved by another staff. She sarcastically said to the other staff in cantonese,’of course I didn’t pass the order to the kitchen, SHE DIDN’T PAY’!

I would caution customers who wants to enter this place. It is much better to have your meals at another shop if you happened to be at Broadway Shopping Centre because it is highly possible that the serving staff(s) speak(s) ill of you in your face in cantonese, thinking that you have no idea that she/they is/are talking about you.

    • Hi Chloe,

That sounds like a pretty terrible experience! Maybe it’s worth speaking to the boss next time and telling him your experience. It’s always worthwhile to give constructive feedback. Hopefully it doesn’t happen too often!

      • Dear Nat and Chloe:

        1) Chloe…The matter has to be heard from both parties as i was there that day…and understood the situation from the (former)staff is that they tried to swipe your credit card for the ammount of 10.80AUD for more then 8 times (which each swipe cost me as the operator .42cents/swipe=call out. and they did try to ask you for another card whilst you were holding up a que behind you. you could have just paid the meal in cash or just brought out the other card wheb the first few transactions were declined that would have saved us all this silly embarassment. After all that Chloe your meal actually cost more then you SHOULD have paid for…(which we have called up the merchant bank to confirm this farce that YOUR credit card was Blocked)to subsidise due to your arrogance knowing that your card is NOT a valid card. All this fuss over a fried rice noodle at AUD10.80/-. It saddens me to know that we have a POOR cultured ASIAN dinners out there. Such a DISGRACE.

2)Thank you Nat for trying to step-up for the Just side but, it is hard to Justify the sittuation at hand whilst only hearing from one side.
How’s the family doing anyway? Hope to hear from you soon under better and more cheerful setting.

And to all Please we are a respectable Restaurant and those working in my premise are all respectable human beings “We respect those whom allow us the opportunity to provide you with the MEALS you ordered to our best extend. If there is any disgruntlements PLEASE bring the matter forward to ME. Richard Choo”

  5. In case any of you are wondering when did this incident happened, the details are as follow:
    – Date: 23 May 2011
    – Time: 12.45pm – 1.30pm
    – food ordered: billy lee’s special fried rice noodle

I actually lost my appetite for that meal. Disgusted.

  6. I used to eat at University Asian quite a bit back when I was studying (especially during exam time!) Good takeaway and efficient service. Have never had a problem.

  7. I have the pleasure of going to this delightful restaurant quite often, Richard remembers my family every time, we have had birthday celebrations and Richard has done nothing but make us feel special and provided us with wonderful dishes. I remember the first time i ate there, i asked what would you recommend, we order a vegetable stack and a different type of noodles. These two dishes are by far my favorites. I Understand people complain of poor service… I am always seating within minutes and my order is always taken at a reasonable pace. The food comes flying out of the kitchen and it always steaming!

I look forward to dining at this restaurant this evening!

I honestly thing some people are trying to give this wonderful place a bad reputation, at the end of the day we are all humans trying to survive, no one is perfect, if someone makes a mistake so be it! Everyone deserves a second chance. I strongly erg anyone who enjoys a cheap and cheerful mean to Richards restaurant, he has failed to disappoint me over the years!!!!

    kind regards

    Blair
