Regal on Roe Seafood Restaurant is located on Roe Street in Northbridge, minutes away from the Perth train station. Ever since they opened, I’d wanted to try their food but never had a chance until now. So when my mum had a dimsum craving one day, I suggested for us to check this place out.
I’ve heard mixed review on them, ranging from “great food and good value for money” to “just average” to “not really worth your time”. I was a bit perplexed on such diversity in opinions on the place! For all you guys reading this and have been to the restaurant before, feel free to leave a comment for comparison! I would really like to know your opinion! =)
Regal on Roe is quite a big restaurant and looks great on the inside with its new furnishing. I especially like the yellowy lantern lights hanging from the ceiling. The word ‘regal’ does suit the restaurant! There was a big crowd waiting for tables outside when I arrived (usual scene for a Sunday yumcha session) but luckily my parents got there earlier than me and was in queue for a table already so we didn’t have to wait for long!
I was trying to find different dimsum dishes to try but there weren’t that many to choose from besides the usual. Eventually I found a few looking at their menu and ordered some. Here are a selection of what we had that day:
The usual – Pork Dumpling, Tripes, Egg Tart, Fried Yam Dumpling, Chicken Pie, Pork with Century Egg Porridge and Soya Bean Pudding (Tau Foo Far).
Comments: The dimsum we had that day was pretty average, no different than other restaurants I’d been. I liked the Pork Dumpling though, they were meaty with no obvious pork smell and the Egg Tart, with its crunchy base and filling egg centre. The Soya Bean Pudding however wasn’t that flash, rough in texture and the syrup tasted bland.
I spotted these three dishes that looked a bit different than the usual. They looked great but didn’t taste as good as they looked. The Ham-Beef Roll was nice but got a bit overpowering at the end as the sauce is very thick and salty. The Sweet Fried Dough also tasted nice on the first bite but did not taste as crunchy as it looked – maybe it got a bit cold by the time it came to our table. This dish definitely have to be eaten as soon as it comes out from the kitchen, otherwise it will lose the crunch. The Duck Wrap we had was a bit of a rip-off as there were only a few stripes of duck pieces in the wrap but filled with lots and lots of bean sprouts and spring onion. They were also quite oily.
Disappointment …the Salted Egg Custard Bun
My greatest disappointment was the Salted Egg Custard Bun!! This is my favourite dish normally but the buns here were hard and heavy and the custard filling tasted a bit funny (neither sweet nor salty) and did not ooze out as it should. =(
By now, you could probably tell that I didn’t quite enjoy the dimsum here as I should. Needless to say, I was slightly disappointment that day with the food and my family were not that impressed either. So I left not having much of an impression of the place.
The story however did not end there. By chance my best friend had her engagement dinner party there the following month and so I got to try their dinner menu and it was simply awesome! We had alot of food and they all turned out really great – I should have taken some food photos that night but I got a bit lazy =p. So I came out that night having a different opinion of the place. Will definitely be back to try their other dinner dishes! I heard their Peking Duck is really yummy there…
