Jaws Kaiten Sushi is located in the Hay Street Mall right next to Target in the city.  It is a small restaurant, fitting roughly 25 people max and seats are centred around the conveyor belt carrying a large variety of sushis and Japanese food.  Often you will find yourself rubbing shoulders with a stranger sitting next to you as the seats are at very close proximity.

I frequented Jaws often during my uni days especially their other big restaurant on the other side of the city on Hay St as it was less crowded.  This restaurant however has since closed down as an apartment/office block is being built there.  I haven’t been back since and this time round was quite surprised with their refurbished menu and their selection of dishes – they even offer something similar to Vietnamese spring roll on their menu (you will see this later in the photos).

So lunch that day was a crowded affair and we had to wait a bit for free seats.  A good thing though about this restaurant is the quick turnaround!  I think most people just go there for a quick lunch whilst out shopping as it doesn’t really provide an environment for a chat, so people normally wouldn’t linger around.

The beauty of this place is the wide range of dishes you can choose from and the freedom to eat whatever you want in any sequence – all you have to do is pick a dish that you like off the conveyor belt!  Also you can order from the menu if you don’t see what you want and you will be able to observe the Japanese chefs preparing your food right in front of you (if you are lucky).  The chefs basically live in the centre of the conveyor belt making the sushis, and it’s quite fun to watch them if you like that sort of thing.

Here are a few selections we had that day (hover of the photos for the name of the dishes).  Prices ranged from $3.10 – $6.20 – the uncommon dishes can get quite expensive.

Tempura Ghunkan - Prawn Tempura Ebi Fry - Crumbed Fried Prawn Teriyaki Chicken Takoyaki - Fried Octopus Dumplings Shiitake Ghunkan - Shiitake Mushroom with Sesame Seed Oil Calamari - Crumbed Fried Squid Jelly Fish Ghunkan - Jelly Fish, Sesame & Chilli Beef Tataki Nigiri - Marinated Thinly Sliced Beef Beef Spring Roll - Teriyaki Beef, Lettuce & Sushi Rice wrapped in Rice Paper Tuna Ghunkan - Tuna with Mayonnaise Unagi Nigiri - BBQ Eel Chicken Kara-age

Some Japanese food terms definition:

  • Ghunkan – round sushi wrapped with seaweed and topped with various ingredients.
  • Nigiri – oblong  mound of sushi rice that is pressed between the palms of the hands, usually with a bit of wasabi, and a topping draped over it.
  • Karaage – Japanese styled fried meat, most often soy flavored chicken.

And now to my favourite dish in Jaws for nearly a decade – the Chicken Udon (Udon Noodle Soup with Chicken) at $5.50.  It used to be only $3.00 during my uni years and it was the main reason why I went back to Jaws again and again, cheap and yummy for a student =)

Then on to another favourite segment of mine – dessert!  We had the Green Tea Ice Cream which was topped with cream and vanilla wafers and Taiyaki, Japanese pancake filled with sweet red bean paste, at $4.90 a piece.

Overall, it was a great lunch.  The food is very fresh (I think most probably due to it being so busy so there’s no leftover ingredients) and there are much more varieties now than what I remembered, although the prices seem to have gone up as well.  The waiting staff were friendly and you always get greeted with a smile and a loud shout of ‘Irashaimase’ - welcome in Japanese.  Will definitely be back again as the occasion arises.
