Bullcreek Chinese Restaurant is located on Parry Avenue in Bullcreek in the upper corner of the Parry Avenue Shopping Centre. Looking from the outside, it looks like your typical suburban chinese restaurant and the inside proved to be so too – with overhanging paper lanterns on the ceiling, fire crackers and red paper on the wall. It is a simple restaurant but big enough to fit a large crowd. The place was filled out by the time we arrived there for dinner so I thought it must be quite decent.
My friend recommended this place for its ‘Beef Fried Kway Teow’ and so we had to order this to try. ‘Fried Kway Teow’ is a popular noodle dish in Malaysia and Singapore and is basically stir-fry flat rice noodle with whatever ingredients you want to add to it. I think the secret behind the tastiness to this dish is the way you stir-fry the dish and the heat from the wok. The best I’d tasted is still the ones you get from the hawker’s stall in Malaysia – stir fried with clams! Yum!
Anyways, back to our meal, the other dishes we had that night were the Vegetarian Claypot, Sizzling Garlic King Prawn, Cantonese Style Steak Fillet, Sizzling Japanese Tofu with Chicken Mince and Yam Duck.
Review: The food I thought were quite average and nothing really stood out. However, I was more so disappointed with the “Beef Kway Teow” and the Yam Duck. The Beef Kway Teow was slightly wet (maybe from too much oil?) and the sauce wasn’t distributed evenly throughout the dish as you can still see some white bits as you pick the noodle. The Yam Duck on the other hand was too heavily battered and I thought there must have cooked a skinny duck or something as you can’t taste the meat. The sauce was also too starchy and tasteless and didn’t add any flavour to the duck as it’s supposed to.
Not entirely satisfied with the mains, we ordered some desserts to compensate and had the following:
- Fried Ice Cream
- Banana Fritter with Ice Cream
- Red Bean Pancake with Ice Cream
The desserts provided some comfort as they were yummy! You can’t really go wrong with these kind of desserts – unless you get the batter all wrong, but in this instance, they were good so no complaints there.
Overall, dinner that night wasn’t too great and it also didn’t help with the poor service we received. It would be awhile before I’ll return to eat there again.
