Stewart’s at Brookleigh is located in the picturesque Swan Valley, only about an hour’s drive away from Perth.  The restaurant is nestled between a vineyard and the Brookleigh Equestrian Estate, looking very much like a dreamy house set in a far away land.  We went there for dinner as part of our hen’s getway weekend and upon arrival, found soft glowing lanterns hanging at the entrance with beautiful plants adorning the side.  Perfect atmosphere for the occasion.

The restaurant has a rustic interior and feels very homely and welcoming.  It has both an inside area and a more casual alfresco area, with widely spaced tables.  We were sitted outside the alfresco area which we didn’t mind too much even though it was cold as the area is well protected with wind proof covering and has mini-heaters located throughout.  There was one right on top of our table so that was a bonus.

We were starving by the time we arrived at the restaurant so we took no time in going through the menu and ordering.  The restaurant was only 5 – 10 minutes away from our accomodation but for some reason, the car we were following which had the Navigator took us all the way to Bullsbrook and beyond - we were driving for 20 minutes or so before realising something is really wrong and turned back!  Sometimes technology can fail us too!  I should have trusted the map in my hands instead!

At the Stewart’s at Brookleight, we had the opportunity to try their Winter Menu 2009:

For entrees, we had:

  • Bowl of Chips with Aioli Sauce
  • Garlic and Parmesan Bread - $8.50
  • Tempura Oysters, Wasabi Mayonnaise - $3.50 each

The Chips were the best, they were shoe string and tasted so good dipped in the creamy aioli sauce.  The Garlic Bread on the other hand was average.  I thought it would have tasted better with the parmesan on top of it but I couldn’t really taste the difference.  They had some fancy green and red sauce that came with the bread though - points for presentation.

As for the Tempura Oyster, I’d never seen this dish before so I was quite eager to try it and they turned out quite unique.  Crisp tempura batter on the outside with a slight tinge of spiciness from the wasabi whilst maintaining the softness and freshness of the raw oyster inside.  A great dish!  I wanted more.

For mains, we had:

  • Honey Duck Breast ($34) with duck and shitake spring roll
  • Lamb Shank Wellington ($34) with soft polenta and braising juices
  • Salmon Saltimbocca ($34) with potato spinach gnocchi and lemon sauce
  • Fillet Steak ($37) with roesti and parmesan gelato
  • Beetroot, Pumpkin, Walnut & Persian Fetta Tart ($30)

The best mains that night was probably the Honey Duck Breast with the shitake spring roll.  I wanted to order this dish initially as it sounded good just reading it off the menu but didn’t end up doing so.  I had a taste of it though and found the duck meat to be tender with a nice flavour.  The spring roll was filled with duck meat too and fully packed!  Nice!  I really liked this dish.

The dish I chose was the Salmon Saltimbocca with the gnocchi.  I thought the salmon was slightly overcooked and the cream sauce was overpowering at the end but it wasn’t a bad dish overall.  I had a bit of the Lamb Shank too – my only comment is that it looked better than it tasted.  It was a huge dish though so for those meat eaters out there…

Overall, a great place for dinner, with nice food and a wonderful ambience.  You can tell that they had thoughts and effort into the menu and the food presentation – bonus points.  They also have a vast selection of wines (well, being a vineyard and all), we only tried their house wines that night, nothing too fancy.  Service was top notch too, very accomodating with whatever requests we had.  Will recommend this place for sure!
