Chock Dii Thai is located in the corner edge of the tiny square lot off the east end of Albany Highway where other restaurants such as Charcoal Chicken, Bintang Cafe etc also reside. It is quite obscure and without the Entertainment Book, I would probably not know of its existence. However since finding this place, we have been frequent visitors whenever we want a quick Thai food fix.
Chock Dii Thai is family-owned and operated and has a casual and relaxed atmosphere about it. It looks small from the outside and this impression stays with you until you step deeper into the restaurant and discover a huge extended area at the back, painted a dull orange colour, complete with pot plants, Koi pond and a water feature. Not sure whether they are trying to achieve the rustic look but it didn’t work for me – the decor and lighting of the place made it drabby and lifeless.
As it was an early dinner that day, there was no one around so service was extremely quick. We had the following:
- Golden Parcels (3pcs) – $8.90
- Tom Yum Prawn Soup – $11.90
- Tofu Pad Woon Sen – $15.90
- Duck Red Curry – $21.90
- Mixed Seafood Kata Rawn – $28.90
- Steamed Rice
A description of the dishes for those unfamiliar with Thai food and my thoughts on the dishes as follow:
- Golden Parcels: dumpling filled with chicken mince, vermicelli and vegetable – it is basically pastry filled with various goodies (in this case, chicken mince) and deep fried to a crisp. One of my preferred Thai entree (me+fried food = close friends!) This entree is similar to the “Golden Money Bag” dish which signifies prosperity, so the more you eat this the better it is, as legend goes :p.
- Tom Yum Soup: spicy and sour soup with lemongrass, tomato, spring onion, mushroom and prawns – the soup was up to scratch and was quite spicy, love the generous amount of mushrooms in there.
- Pad Woon Sen: stir fry glass noodle with spring onion, carrot, mushroom and soy sauce – this tasted like a chinese dish and was quite salty.
- Red Duck Curry: red curry with boneless roast duck strips, pineapple, lychee and tomato – I’d always commented on Thai restaurants based on their red duck curry (my favourite Thai dish!) and this dish was on the average side. The taste of lychee with the curry was strange too (I have yet to embrace the fruity fusion dishes!)
- Kata Rawn: sizzling stir fry with vegetables – didn’t expect much with this dish, just wanted some vegetables in us.
Overall, it was a good meal, very filling with the curry and rice. Prices I thought were slightly above average so it was good that we had a voucher. Service was prompt and friendly. I would go again for a casual Thai dining experience (also partly because it’s so near my house!)
