Dao Vien Vietnamese Restaurant is located on the corner of Fitzgerald and Roe Street in Northbridge and it has been there as long as I can remember!  I frequented this place once so often until the likes of Phi Yen and Tra Vinh sprang up and took my attention away.  However I still return when the occasion calls for trusty vietnamese food to chomp on.

Dao Vien has a casual atmosphere about it and is very simple decor-wise, almost bare-ish.  Maybe a bit too simple as we were there one Saturday evening and the place was empty.  There were only 2 or 3 tables occupied.  I was quite surprised as I think their food is tasty and authentic.  Maybe decor does count with diners, ALOT.  I think expectations from diners do grow higher and higher with more choices around.  Not only do the food have to taste good and be reasonably priced, there are also factors like service, restaurant ambience, decor and even how the food and drinks are presented.  It is easy to be left out in the cold if any one of the factor(s) are not taken into account!

We were there for a quick dinner that night and had the following:

  • Rice paper wrapped with mint leaves, beansprout, lettuce and shredded pork ($5.20)
  • Vietnamese broken rice with pork chop, fried egg and shredded pork ($9.80)
  • Braised duck egg noodle soup ($10.80)

The Vietnamese Spring Rolls were yummy – two per dish which was perfect for us.  It was stuffed full of goodies and the dipping fish sauce went marvellously with them.  I’d tried making these at home but they never taste as good as the ones in a restaurant.  I must learn the secret in making these one day!  Maybe it’s in the fish sauce?  (Side Note:  I think I’d been watching too many Luke Nguyen’s cooking shows, I’d noticed all of his dishes contain fish sauce!)

For main, I had the Braised Duck Egg Noodle Soup and it was awesome too!  Check out the size of the duck piece plonked right in the centre of the bowl!  The dish was overflowing with soup and beansprout which I like :).  My cousin ordered the Broken Rice and liked it too especially the big chunk of grilled pork that came with it.  Very filling to say the least.

Overall it was a good meal for us that night.  I would go back there again for the food, not so much for the atmosphere though.  Great place if you are looking for cheap authentic Vietnamese food.  They also make their own egg noodles to sell and I heard they are good!

  1. I’ve wondered about this place for a while, noticing its almost-empty, atmosphere-less dining room whenever I drive past. I guess the location can’t help it much either – it’s a bit more out of the way than other options in the area.

Looks good but I’m so loyal to Phi Yen!

  2. Went there last saturday. There’s parking behind restaurant on roe st. Or else take blue cat and get down shenton st bus stop facing Russell Square and walk down 2 streets down. Best egg noodle soup i ever eaten since i live in perth for 8 yrs. I took the braised duck egg noodle soup. It was less salty than i expected plus their fried ice cream is the BOMB!even my friend who never ate fried ice cream b4 is now addicted!lol!great to try with friends for lunch. B4 i forget, after this blog post was published, prices have risen. I paid $11.30 for a big bowl of braised duck egg noodle soup.

  3. I have dined in this restaurant many times and while the place could do with a make over the food never fails to please. The salt and pepper squid and the crispy duck in plum sauce are fantastic. Prices are reasonable. so worth a try…
