I am not usually one who would go to an Indian establishment for a meal. I can understand the love that people have for their food whilst I find it tasty, I never really do have Indian cuisine much.
So having this meal would probably surprise some of you readers who actually know me and who are mates with me. But hey, I’m one of surprises! Ha! How it happened? CS and I were planning to watch a movie together before heading out to have some chow. And as we were exchanging emails on what we were going to have, he mentioned curry. And here’s the thing – CS knows I don’t really have Indian when I am out. And so after some more email exchange, I found myself obliging to it!
So off we went after catching a movie, and through the help of his GPS, we found our way to this little joint in North Perth within a little shopping complex. Should have gotten some booze before heading in because this place is actually BYO! Anyway, Bollywood Spices is a small place, with only about 6-7 tables in total.
We were greeted by a young man, who showed us to our table, which was right in front of the till.
I was told to place the order while CS went to look around for some wine. I decided to order:
- Butter Chicken
- Beef Vindaloo
- Garlic Naan
Unfortunately, we didn’t have any wine this evening because CS couldn’t find a bottle shop. Oh wells.
The pappadums were a teaser for us, and it was nice because of little sesame seeds and a little cumin that was in it. It is different to what I have had in the limited number of Indian restaurants I have been to, and I must say that I enjoyed it.
We didn’t have to wait for long before the garlic naan came as well, and the first thing we both noticed was the fresh garlic that was spread on top the naan, and that smell! Lovely. As we started tearing the naan, the curries arrived with the rice and off we went stuffing ourselves!
I used the naan to dip into the butter chicken, which is one of the usual things I would order when I do go to Indian establishments. The thickness of the curry made it really nice to have with the naan, and the taste not too overpowering. I enjoyed this.
The beef vindaloo packed enough punch to cause CS to perspire quite profusely over the duration of the meal (I found it rather amusing *grin*). Not that I could handle the heat any better because I found myself scratching my head as I dug into the curry too.
There wasn’t much of a service here because of the size and the casual nature of the place. The price was typical.
All in all, the curries did pack some flavour that I enjoyed, and the garlic naan had that nice touch of fresh garlic, which I certainly enjoyed. I wouldn’t mind going back there, and who knows, maybe this is the start of many more Indian places to come!
