Rice Noodle House, Shelley

InsideIt is not easy (to my mind) to find a good nasi lemak place in Perth. Much less one that is of great value. AH has been telling me about Rice Noodle House, and their awesome nasi lemak and rendang for a long long time. And being the eager beaver that I was, I decided to pull the folks along to Shelley one afternoon to give the place a go.

Coinciding with our early lunch time, we arrived at Rice Noodle House just a little after they opened (11.30am). The place boasts of only a small area, so getting there early is always a good idea.

Joy Juice! We found ourselves a seat, and deliberated on their rather simple menu, which was about a page and a half. Heading there for nasi lemak, we decided on the following:

  • Nasi Lemak with Fried Chicken (large)
  • Nasi Lemak with Curry Chicken
  • Rendang
  • Kailan with oyster sauce
  • Kickapoo for drinks

Kickapoo has always been a childhood favourite for me growing up in Singapore, so I was delighted to relive those moments.

Unlike most Asian cafes, we had to wait longer than usual for our food, but when the plates did arrive, I just couldn’t wait to dig in, with all that fantastic aroma coming from the coconut rice!

This looked like the real deal, with sides of ikan billis (fried anchioves), sambal, and a fried egg too. The rice was plump and filled with good flavour. The fact that it wasn’t sticky was the sign that it is cooked perfectly. The ikan billis was cooked wonderfully with the crunch being felt with each bite taken. The sambal tasted close to that in Singapore, so I was definitely delighted!

Fried ChickenHaving it with the fried chicken strips was definitely the winner (in comparison to the curry chicken). The fried chicken was seasoned beautifully and because it was small trips, there was a good amount of crunch with each bite.

The curry chicken was tasty, and had a good flavour. I personally wouldn’t order it again, but it was well worth the try.

Rendang #1Rendang #2

The rendang was a.w.e.s.o.m.e. I had been told by AH to try this and what a great recommendation! Filled with lots and lots of desiccated coconut, and with meat that was so easy to chew because of how tender it was, the rendang was a sheer winner dish this afternoon!

Kailan with oyster sauce

The kailan was average… it was really to fulfill the ‘completeness’ of a meal with some vegetables, more than anything.

Rice Noodle House is definitely a force to be reckoned with, especially with its killer nasi lemak and rendang!
