Maharaja Indian Restaurant is located on Stirling Highway in Nedlands. We picked this place for my second farewell lunch at the company I was seconded to, the first lunch at Royal Seafood Restaurant for dimsum. Quite spoilt :)
Maharaja looked quite grand with its golden furnishing and antique style decor, and comfortable seats. We were offered complimentary Papadum after we sat down. They were very crispy and welcoming to our hungry stomachs!
For starters, we had Meat Samosas. They usually come in 4 pieces per serving ($8), but as there were five of us that day, the lady kindly prepared 5 for us. Samosas are triangle shaped Indian style curry puffs stuffed with potatoes and a type of meat, minced lamb on this occasion. They were tasty!
For mains, we had:
- Chicken Tikka Masala ($21.90) – chicken breast tikkas cooked in a medium sauce with onions, tomatoes, fresh coriander and green spices
- Chicken Makhani ($21.90) – chicken breast tikkas marinated and cooked in Tandoori oven, finished with mild rich sauce with tomatoes, butter and cream
- Beef Vindaloo ($21.50) – hot beef dish cooked in a hot spicy curry with a touch of vinegar
My favorite was the Chicken Makhani, which is actually “Butter Chicken”, makhan being the Hindi for butter. We had two of those! The sauce was rich and creamy, and went well with the various Naan we ordered (approx $4 – $5.50 per serve). We also tried the Kashmiri Naan, stufffed with dried fruit and spices. I didn’t quite like that, preferring the old-fashioned Plain or Garlic Naan as it tasted like sweet bread which didn’t go with the curries.
Not to forget the Saffron Rice ($5.50) and Cucumber Raita ($4) to dampened the hot spicy taste.
It was a nice lunch, more so with the great company :)
