Kinky Lizard, East Perth

Website: http://www.kinkylizard.com.au

Continuing the breakfast posts, this time it was time to meet and catch up with SC and MS. Keen on trying a new place in East Perth, we chose Kinky Lizard over Toast (even though I do love that joint!).

Hidden in a little corner along Royal Street, where a growing number of great cafés are starting to pop up, Kinky Lizard is not too easily missed because of its cute little sign on the outside of the café.

Arriving there first, I quickly got a table for us outside – who wants to be kept inside on a day when the sun is out! After talking a bit of nonsense, and reading through the menu, we decided on the following:

  • Chorizo Funghi (Grilled chorizo sausage on a Ciabatta Wedge with Field Mushroom & Poached Eggs)
  • Eggs Benedict
  • Build Your Breakfast (Poached egg, field mushroom, asparagus)
  • Usual coffees

The most special of the lot we ordered was probably the Chorizo Funghi – something not seen too often around the cafés around Perth. I was rather impressed with the serving of the Chorizos being rather generous. The combination of both mushrooms and chorizo is definitely a winner for me, though I think it would have gotten a bit heavy on the tummy towards the end.

The breakfast that I built was light, and I have to admit that when I said “Poached egg”, I thought there would be 2 in a serve. Having to pay $4 for one egg is a bit too much for my pocket. I know better next time for sure. The other items tasted alright – nothing too ‘wow’ about.

The eggs benedict looked alright – typical of what you would expect of any eggs benedict dish though the hollandaise sauce did look a little more diluted than expected. As to its taste, I didn’t actually taste this, so I will have to give ‘reviewing’ this a go.

The coffees were decent. Nothing to complain, nothing to grant too many kudos on either. Service here was pretty good but the service is really only restricted to the wait staff taking orders at the counter, and serving the main meals. They were friendly though – which is always a plus when dining at any café/restaurant. As they say, “A smile goes a long way”.

I don’t know if I would be back to this place – it was lovely while it lasted, but I think I’d go try some other places first before returning.

Restaurant Amuse, East Perth

Website: www.restaurantamuse.com.au

Entertainment Book Card: 25% off (up to a value of $40)

Restaurant Amuse is located in an unassuming spot on Bronte Street, its reputation far exceeds its somewhat secluded location in East Perth.  Winner of the Best Fine Dining Restaurant of the Year for three consecutive years, it was opened late 2007 by owner Hadleigh & Carolynne Troy.  We decided to go there this year to celebrate my sister’s birthday.

Due to its immense popularity, it was at least a month’s queue to get a table on the weekend!  Aahh bad planning on my part!  We had to go on a week night instead.  So for those who are planning a dinner there, call early to get reservation!

To my surprise, Amuse has quite a simple decor – dark flooring with white panelled walls, and matching black tables and white chairs.  Simple but nice.

Restaurant Amuse serves only a 10 course degustation menu, priced at $125pp for food only, and does not offer an a la carte menu.  An extra $75pp is charged for wine pairing.

On arrival, instead of a menu with a list of the dishes to be served, we were given instead a sealed envelope and a choice of whether to open the envelope or be surprised!  Being curious, I opted to open!!  Inside was a list of ingredients to be used for the 10 course meal.  Not very informative!  It was explained to us that the menu changes with the season, based on quality produce that is procured and the chef’s creativity, therefore dishes are not listed!  Amusing!

Let the degustation begins!

Oh…but before that…the drinks:

  • Berry & Mint Punch ($10) – berries, mint & cranberry
  • Apricot Fizz ($10) – apricot, apple & lemon
  • Apple Julep ($10) – apple, mint & lime
  • Peppermint Liquer

First up..the Snacks - assorted platter of breadsticks wrapped with jamon iberico, crispy onion rings, organic oats cracker with sour cream and tasmanian ocean trout.  Amazing..and this is just the starter!

Next come the Sourdough Bread served with Kailis organic olive oil, and kept warm with heated stones underneath.  Wow!

And now the Main Courses…they are all simply delightful!

  • Blue Ridge Marron/Shima Wasabi/Soy Beans/Lime
  • Organic beetroot/Coffee Cocoa/Persian Feta/Wine Granita

  • Polenta with Free Range Eggs…came smoking in a glass jar!

  • Rottnest Scallops/Ocean Trout
  • Bread with Ricotta
  • Shiitake and Enoki Mushroom Broth
  • Amelia Park Lamb/Sea Lettuce/Potato

That’s the end of the main courses…we were given a Chardonnay Jelly to cleanse our palate before dessert time!

The first dessert course is a Rhubarb Compote and oats hidden under you wouldn’t guess what..fairy floss!  The sauce was poured over the floss to reveal the dessert underneath :)

Next came a course of Chocolate Dessert and a platter of assorted doughnut/marshmallow/jubes!

We also ordered the Cheese Platter option and tea to finish off the night.

Overall, it was a very satisfying meal, quite eye opening with the variety of dishes.  The staff were warm and very attentive and we were well looked after.  Explanation came with each dish and table was wiped after each course.  The napkin was even folded nicely and placed on the table each time we left the table, yeah!  Entertaining meal and well worth the price!

Joe’s Oriental Diner, Perth

Website: www.joesorientaldiner.com.au

Entertainment Book Card: 25% off (up to a value of $25)

Eating WA VIP Card: 15% off (up to a value of $50)

Joe’s Oriental Diner is one of the restaurants on offer at the Hyatt Regency Perth Hotel bearing a South East Asian cuisine comprising of dishes originating from Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore.  The restaurant itself is located at street level with its entrance facing Adelaide Terrace.  One can find Plain Street Bar and La Strada right alongside it.  What make this restaurant so special is that I used to work here during my uni days!  Lots of great memories from late night coffees to cocktails concoctions to serving celebrity Nick Cave & band :)

This is the second time I’d been back to dine at the restaurant since I quit and most of the front end staff I’d worked with had left.  The only person I know is the Head Chef who is still manning the open view kitchen where all the chefs do their thang.  It was awesome to walk in this lunch time and see him standing there, at his usual spot of authority!

Joe’s Oriental Diner is all timber, bamboo, rattan and terracotta - exuding a noodle house ambience (as its original intent of the restaurant) but with airconditioning!  It is adorned with antiques, paintings on walls and ancient gadgets strewn over the side tables, a very befitting atmosphere for a restaurant carrying an asian cuisine.  The senior engineer I work with had been wanting to try this place out and the opportunity came when we held a lunch to bid farewell to a colleague from New Zealand who had come over to help us out on a project.  A last minute event, we arrived with no reservation!  A no no as the restaurant was full!  A few minutes passed and we were ushered to the front corner of the restaurant – the lonely and forgotten corner (a nickname we used to give this corner due to its segregation from the main sections).  Albeit that, we were still happy to get a spot.

It was a hot day so all of us settled for sparkling water for our drinks.  I like the new bottle from Mount Franklin!

For our meal, we had the following:

  • Curry Laksa ($14) – with noodles, shrimps, chicken, fishcake, fishballs
  • Nasi Goreng ($15) – with chicken, beef satays, achar and a fried egg
  • Beef Rendang ($19.50) – with lemongrass, galangal and lime leaves
  • Wok Fried Honey Pepper Beef ($21) – with glazed onion and green Chinese vegetables
  • Thai Green Seafood Curry ($23)

I’d tried all the dishes that my colleagues ordered and knew they were all good especially the curry dishes.  My all time favourite though whilst working in Joes was the Nasi Goreng!  It’s the bomb – wok fried rice, slightly spicy with 2 x satay sticks, fried egg as well as acar (pickled vegetables originating from Indo).  All the goodies in one plate.  The dish didn’t disappoint this time, it still tasted the same as before.  The only thing different is the plate with which it was served in.  It used to be a steel long oval bowl sitting on four curvy legs – it was so special!..but now it was just sitting on a plain white plate.  What happened?!  That goes for all the other dishes!! Bring back the old plates!

My colleagues all loved their meals and gave a good rating!  Yay, I’m glad Joes is still up to standard after so many years :)

A great place to dine with yummy food and a variety of drinks such as the famous Singapore Slings (their specialty!) which we did not order this time round.  The restaurant is especially good for work or business lunches.  Although the prices are slightly above average, they have to be charged accordingly – you are still dining in a 5-star hotel!  I might be a bit biased but definitely a recommendation if you have not eaten here before.  Joes also offer food promotions every month – check out the hotel website for details.  Joe Rock!

Toast, East Perth

Website: http://www.toasteastperth.com/

It was catch up time with the sisters before they headed on their Europe holiday. We decided to try the place that people have been raving about in East Perth – Toast!

It was a beautiful morning to have brunch. Especially when it was still considered winter. The sun was shining, the sky was fairly clear, and the morning air was crisp as you would expect from our lovely Western Australia.

Toast is in line with the rest of the upcoming places in the East Perth scene… conveniently located next to The Royal on the Waterfront, there is always the opportunity to steal a glass of wine or a pint of beer after the big breakfast!

Being amazed at their new borrowed DSLR, we took a while contemplating our order:

  • Full Breakfast ($18.90)
  • Eggs Norwegian ($16.90)
  • Open Rye Sandwich with Smoked Salmon, Salsa, Avocado, Capers, Poached Egg ($15.90)
  • Watermelon Juice
  • Orange & Carrot Juice
  • Sunrise/Cowboy (cannot for the life of me remember which one, yet again!)

The full breakfast came out looking fresh, but it was a  tad disappointing in a way because it looked a little empty in spots. Probably the size of the plate. :) D.P ordered this breakfast that morning, and she said it was average – what you would expect out of a big breakfast, really. :)

The eggs norwegian came out looking looking rather enticing with the bright coloured hollandaise sauce, and the well toasted muffins. :) The wedge of lemon served on the plate was such a lovely twist to the usual Eggs Norwegian that we’d see around town. I didn’t try this dish, but it was well cleaned up by S.K. for sure!!

I had the open rye sandwich, and it was absolutely LOVELY. I loved the variation to the dish of eggs norwegian, by omitting the hollandaise, and adding the avocado, with the salsa, and the most beautiful vegetable on earth to me…. ROCKET! Woo hoo. It was appetising, but I would have loved to have 2 eggs instead of one. But that would have probably made it unhealthy. Hee.

The juices were what you would expect of freshly squeezed juices… the special concoction (cowboy/sunrise) was quite yummilicious! :)

After that, we were still a little bit hungry and we wanted a nice little coffee, so I went to get us:

  • Cappuccino
  • Hot chocolate
  • Another Juice
  • Brownie

We were not that impressed with the brownie because we started comparing this brownie to the brownie we had at West End Deli last year, which was probably one of the best brownies we have tasted!! :)

The wait staff were friendly, and attentive. They have a rather interesting order-taking structure at the counter when it gets busy, which I found very effective. You make your drinks order with the barrister, and then you make mains orders with the person at the cash register. The coffee orders are then translated from the barrister to the counter person.

Efficiency!

The other lovely thing about this place, which we hadn’t noticed before is the specials board they have inside. They have interesting things to try, and I will definitely be heading in there for a peek the next time I head to have myself some Toast!

Jaws@Mint, Perth

Website: http://www.jawssushi.com.au

Entertainment Book 10/11: 25% off Total Bill

Since we have already done a review on the other branch of Jaws, I shall not waste too much time saying the obvious things!

Having driven past this corner after a rather sumptuous meal at Tak Chee, Miss Anise and myself said that we definitely need to come here to try out their sushi.

This place used to be a non-train Jaws outlet, and since then, they have revamped the place, and it is really quite well done!

Some of the old staff from the former Jaws (for those living in Perth for a long enough period, you’d know that there was a rather big branch of Jaws where the old Hoyts used to be along Hay Street) were actually there working, which was nice.

So I won’t bother going into the details, but I will say that the two main plates that really caught my attention:

  • Creme Brulee (nothing fancy but it does give those people with sweet teeth a nice end to the meal!)
  • Cheese sushi wrapped around with Smoked Salmon – Something different and my favourite of all the plates!

Without further or do, here are the plates the PFE team (yes, we were finally together having a meal after so long) had:

A little break. The service was as what you would expect from any Jaws outlet, the Japanese lady waitresses were all friendly and attentive, and the sushi chefs within the compound of the train tracks were helpful too whenever the ladies couldn’t attend to us. What fascinates me is their ability to remember the colour of the plate for a particular type of sushi. I wonder how long it took them to really remember?!

Anyway. Onwards with the photos!

As we were busy stuffing our mouth with food, whilst watching the time fly by… we noticed one of the sushi chefs torching salmon pieces up in preparation for another variant of sushi creativity.

This place definitely has the ability to make people feel welcome, and whilst their chairs are not the most comfortable in the world (this is coming from one who does have some bum issues)… their fresh sushi and friendly wait staff makes up for this. Think some of their dishes are just not worth the money though. I would definitely  be heading back there sometime! After all, this is one of the few places around the office with decent food to offer! and not much of a waiting time for it for that matter!

Cafe at the Hyatt, East Perth

Website: www.caferestaurant.com.au

Entertainment Card 09/10: 25% off (up to a value of $45)

The Cafe at the Hyatt is a featured restaurant of the Perth Hyatt Regency Hotel in East Perth and had recently been refurbished to bring a fresh look and vibe to the hotel.  This review is of the awesome high tea buffet it offers from 3 – 5pm every Saturdays and Sundays.  I have yet though to try their other buffets.

As mentioned previously, I have had a growing fetish for high tea in the last couple of years and had been sussing out different places to determine the best spot – these included the Leaf Tea Merchant, the Duxton Grill, the Peninsula Tea Gardens (click here for the review) and the Salt on the Beach (review to come).  The high tea at the Cafe is by far the best I have tried!  You will know why after finish reading this entry!

This is the first time I’d been to the Cafe since its refurbishment.  Coming here brings a tinge of nostalgia, of somewhat carefree uni days and of the busy times working in the restaurant(s) here in the hotel.  I did occassionally helped out at the Cafe, although it was my least favourite place to work in (but that’s a different story altogether and I diverge..).  One thing I did remember is that they did not have the high tea buffet back then, otherwise I would have gone ga-ga if I had to work there.  Ah..the memories!

Anyhoos, back to the main topic of the high tea,  it’s an all-you-can-eat affair with both savouries and sweets displayed on a large spread for you to pick and choose from (pics to follow!).  Seating starts in the Cafe itself and spill over to the Conservatory.  The afternoon includes live entertainment as well in the form of a pianist tinkling his way on the keys!  Love the elegant ambience and stylish setting of this place!

I was here in 2008 for mine and an ex-colleague’s birthday and loved it, so I was quite eager to come back here again for my best friend’s birthday celebration (she had been wanting to try this for ages – I hope!).  We had a blast.  The deal included a glass of champagne each, limitless food, coffee and tea for a price of $45 (discounted to $40 after the Entertainment card).

And here come some pictures to show you what I mean!

Our bubblies…

…followed by serving of a variety of perfectly cut sandwiches including egg and spinach, smoked salmon, chicken and many more which we handpicked to share…

..followed by the HIGHLIGHT – four table stations spread with glorious food, all bite-sized: curry puffs, savoury tarts, meatballs, quiches, waffles, jam and scones, jellies and tiramisu in shot glasses, cupcakes, pastries, cheesecakes, meringues, eclairs, fruits, ice-cream, chocolates and my most favourite, their famous sticky date pudding!  You name it, they’ve got it.  I felt like a young school kid being let loose in a candy store!

Wish I took more close-up photos but on this occasion, I was trying to be a subtle blogger.  But I was quite disappointed when I got home and found that I forgot to take a picture of my favourite sticky date pudding….would you believe it?  The sticky date pudding is a must try..it’s absolutely fantastic!  My plate was loaded full of this goodie that day!

What I like about the high tea at the Cafe is the flexibility to pick and choose what you want to eat – great for those who love to try different things and also for the picky ones who only like certain things.  I love the fact that I can keep on eating the stuff that I like, over and over again!  One must try this at least once and it is perfect for any celebrations!

East End Cafe, East Perth

http: www.eastendcafe.com.au

East End Cafe is located on Bennett Street, opposite Hans Palace Chinese Restaurant in East Perth.  From the outside, it looks like a residential building, with its red bricked walls and low doorframe, the only give away being the big red sign up front stating that it’s a cafe.  I found out about this cafe through the senior engineer (RC) at work who had been raving on about the cheap but quality food they have on offer here.  For lunch, prices start from $13 for a one-course meal, $15.50 for a two-course meal and $19.50 for a three-course meal (choice of starter, main and/or dessert).  He discovered this place whilst taking a walk one lunch break and loved it ever since.

This cafe is actually a training restaurant for workers/students to gain hands-on and practical experience in the hospitality industry, what better way than to serve what they produced to real customers!  A perfect training ground for the up and coming chefs, waitstaff etc.  I was fortunate to dine here one day when one of RC’s buddy couldn’t make it to lunch and I was asked to be his replacement.  So off we went one afternoon with another senior engineer (IP).  It was meant to be their reunion and I somehow became the tag-along =p.

The inside of the restaurant is very simple and the decor minimal.  The cafe itself is not very spacious either so bookings should be made in advanced as the place do become full during lunch time.  RC couldn’t get a table the week before when he tried to organise lunch there.

From reading other reviews of this place, it seems that the menu changes quite regularly.  On this occasion, these were the dishes we could choose from (there are four (4) choices for each section):

For Starters: Bouillabaisse, Seafood Cocktail, Stuffed Mushroom or Traditional Caesar

For Mains: Pan Fried Red Spot Emperor, Tandoori Chicken, Penne Pastra or Braised Steak

For Desserts: Apple Tartan, Fresh Fruit Salad, Creme Caramel or Carrot Cake

Once order was taken, we were offered a mini entree (pastry with either egg or prawn topping) and bread to start off with.  The pastry was yum!  Before I forget, the service provided by the waitstaff up to then is worth a mention, on par with a silver service restaurant.

I had the 3-course meal which consisted of the Stuffed Mushroom, Red Spot Emperor and Carrot Cake.

RC and IP both had the 2-course and ordered the same dishes - the Bouillabaisse and Red Spot Emperor.

We also had the Stoneleigh Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough, New Zealand ($22) which was crisp, dry and went really well with the emperor main.

The Bouillabaisse is a seafood broth, finished with prawns, mussels, white fish and presto crouton and is a popular French soup, originating from the city of Marseille according to IP, whose daughter is residing in France at the moment.  He thought the soup tasted great and loved it.  I had the Stuffed Mushroom which was served on a chiffonade of lettuce with a peach cocktail sauce.  Loved the presentation of the dish and the taste was superb – if only the dish was larger!

The Pan Fried Red Spot Emperor was served on a potato mash with a medley of vegetables finished with a lime and ginger beurre blanc.  It was a clear favourite from the menu as all three of us chose this dish as our main.  The meat was tender with a delectable sauce.  Serving was generous too.

I was full to the brim when lunch finished that day, especially after the Carrot Cake and coffee too.  Service throughout the meal was awesome and the head chef even came out to each table after the meal to enquire our thoughts on the food.  They do care about the quality of their food!  This is indeed a great discovery for lunch in the area, good value for money with the food and excellent service.  A place to try!

I couldn’t resist asking RC and IP for a photo together - they have such a cute friendship, meeting in the 70s at work, worked onsite in Fiji at one stage and now ended up seating in the same cubicle at the present company.  They always make me laugh when I hear their conversations in the office.  After much resistance from RC (he hates taking photos), he finally succumbed.  Thanks Roger =)

Samari’s Cafe, East Perth

The sign

Website: www.samariscafe.com.au

Entertainment Voucher 09/10: 25% off (up to a value of $30)

Samari’s Cafe was introduced to me by my colleagues and I frequent this place once in awhile for take-away lunches ever since I started working in East Perth.  Occasionally, we also come here for celebrations and this time round we had lunch here to bid farewell to one of our trainee draftee who had decided to go to uni to study mechanical engineering.  Good on ya JP, although now I’d lost someone to play tricks on!

The cafe is located along Victoria Avenue within the Aaron’s Suite Hotel and specialises in Asian and Cambodian cuisine, including Vietnamese, Chinese and Thai food.  Their lunch menu boasts a huge variety and they offer an all-you-can-eat lunch deal on Fridays for $10.50 – a great bargain!

Samari’s Cafe is a fairly decent sized restaurant and are popular with the working crowd as I often see large group bookings there especially people from my building.  It has both an indoor and alfresco area and has great sitting arrangements, your choice of normal tables or booths.

Counter Indoor seating area

Our Senior Engineer bought us a bottle of white wine that day, the Element Classic White from Sandalford.  It was a great wine, not too heavy, perfect with our lunch.

Element White

For lunch we had the following:

  • Fried Kwai Teow - fresh flat rice noodle, stir fried with chicken breast, mixed seafood, egg & vegies
  • Rice & BBQ Pork - steamed rice served with roasted BBQ pork, pickled and chilli sauce
  • Pad Thai - thai dish with chicken breast & king prawns, egg, chilli, a lemon slice & peanut
  • Basil Stir Fried with Chicken - braised chicken breast stir fried with fresh basil, vegies in basil sauce & chilli paste
  • Fried Rice & Chicken Satay - fried rice with chicken satay sticks served with satay sauce
  • Rice & Salted Pepper Squid - steamed rice served with salted crispy squids, onion, spring onion in special salt & pepper sauce
  • Rice & Seafood Curry - steamed rice served with mixed seafood & veggies in red curry sauce

All the dishes above were lunch specials and cost $10.50 each except for the Basil Stir Fried Chicken which was a main dish and costs $14.95

Fried Kwai Teow Rice & BBQ Pork Pad Thai Basil Chicken Fried Rice with Chicken Satay Rice with Salted & Pepper Squid Rice with Seafood Curry

The food came out and looked great as can be seen in the photos!  They were decent sized meals too which made them all that worthwhile.  I had the Pad Thai that day and liked it – I usually order this dish when I eat here or one of their curries.  They are very generous with the peanuts on the Pad Thai unlike some restaurants who only sprinkle a few bits on top of the noodles.  This is a + for me as I love nuts!  I went round the tables asking for comments on the food and everybody liked their dishes, so no complaints there.

Service is great and prompt, another good point to take note of especially during the peak lunch hour.  You can also download their menu online and order ahead which saves time - that is what I normally do for their take-away.  A great place for lunch!
