Myoung Ga, Perth

As good, quick and reasonably priced places for lunch is not common in the East Perth area where I work, I’m always on the look out for cafes/restaurants to visit.  I walked into our office kitchen one day and spied my colleague eating a nice looking chicken bulgogi (marinated and bbqed) lunch set.  I pounced on him and enquired about his lunch – it was korean, tasted good and was only $10 came the reply.  That was enough to set me off on a lunch quest to try the place out.

Myoung Ga is located on the quieter area of Hay Street, near where Croissant Express, Canton Lounge Bar and Shot Espresso Bar are.  I vaguely recollect visiting this restaurant a few years back but it was a different one then with what I remembered was a mixture of Korean and Japanese food.  Same place but different owner now.

The restaurant can be easily missed as it is so small that it is hardly noticeable, almost like a hole in the wall.  The inside contained 4 – 5 small tables and the outside another 4 small tables.  We sat on the outside.

The menu is quite simple – only two pages, and has the usual BBQ meats and a few traditional korean dishes.

We had the following for lunch:

  • BBQ Beef – $13
  • BBQ Ohsam (consisted of pork and squid) – $15
  • Ja-jang-myun (noodles in a sweet black bean sauce with marinated pork and vegetables with pickles) – $12
  • Bi-bim-bap (steamed rice and vegetables, slices of beef, topped with fried egg & chilli sauce) – $10

The BBQ dishes came in a sizzling pig plate which were very cute :p, and were accompanied with rice, miso soup, kimchi and two side dishes.  They were quite generous servings and filling to say the least.  I especially liked their side dishes of lotus roots and bean sprouts.  I ate most of them as my colleagues didn’t like the side dishes.  The meat were tender and tasty.

The Ja-jang-myun was my colleague’s favourite and he frequents this place so often for this dish that even the owner recognises him.  For myself, I’m not too sure about eating noodles in a black bean sauce (not one of my favourite sauce) but I may give it a try next time.  It must be good though if he comes here that often to eat this.  The regular size for this dish is $10 (the pic is of the large).

The Bi-bim-bap was my order and it was so-so in terms of taste, it seems to be missing the ‘punch’ as what I have tasted in places like Seoul BBQ Cafe or Took Begi.  Not that it’s a bad dish but it was not the best.  You can order it in a stone pot as well for an extra $3, not sure whether that would make a difference to the taste.  Maybe I will try that next time.

The service was extremely good, the owner was very polite and extremely friendly, and catered to our needs in terms of water, efficient order and prompt food service.  I like!  I will definitely be back again.  A great place for a casual lunch, and not to forget their take-away lunch packs as well!

****Nespresso Boutique Opening****

http://www.nespresso.com/#/au/en

The PFE’s were honoured (well, more than honoured actually – totally in awe and shock and in absolute delight) to be part of the invitees chosen for the official launch of the Nespresso Boutique right here in Perth!

I have to say when I first received the email from one of the fine people, I was wondering, “what is this?”… and when I read further, I realised, “wow! awesome!” It is not very often that we do get invited to such events, so I was personally really excited.

As the date approached, we received the actual invite in the mail, and wow. It was absolutely grand. It almost felt like we were celebrities. The feeling was totally awesome to say the least. (:

But enough of that! Let’s get on to the actual deal.

The date was 6th December 2012, 6.30pm.

Upon arriving, I saw a queue of people outside (I was early), and everyone was dressed up so very nicely. Being the sloppy person that I usually am (unless I know that I have to make the effort to dress up!)… I was there in my work clothes, and saw every other lady dressed so prettily with their cocktail dresses, and high heel shoes. Felt rather under-dressed to say the least! But tis okay, my partner in crime, Miss L came along, and so onward we went to join the queue!

It wasn’t long before we were greeted by a Nespresso staff member, who took our names down, and when we entered, the first word that really came to mind “WOW”. Colours, sophistication, elegance, inviting, lovely.

On the left as you entered, you would see the pod variety Nespresso had to offer, stacked up nicely in their various colours… and really, what I found, was that I never did realise the range they had with their coffee! And whoever thought to use those bright and striking colours, K.U.D.O.S!

On the right hand side, one would see interesting little ‘sections’ of the boutique, one of them, the “Discovery Wall”. Pretty aptly named, considering they featured all (I would think?) their Nespresso machines, old and new.

Now, although I do not own one, I will say that I will own one in the near-ish future! Promise! (:

Of course, the good fun doesn’t stop here.

The other sections include a “Recycle” station, “The Club Room”, “The Collection Wall (?)”.

It really wasn’t long before I realised we were in the presence of true celebrities… borrowing the excellent knowledge of a fellow food blogger we met that night, the celebrities who attended this evening were Basil Zemplias , Josh Catalano, Alissandra Moone, Patti Chong, Herb Faust, Rick Hart, as well as Daniela Pitone and Stefania Muscara.

Along with these celebrities, food bloggers who were present included the infamous food pornographer (I am personally a fan!), Simon Says Eat, Foodie Cravings, Perth Munchkin (sorry we didn’t get to talk much at all!) and Libertine Eats (it was actually M who came along to say hi to us first and later introduced us to the other great bloggers, so thank you!).

We saw quite a number of people being served with some Veuve Clicquot champagne, so there was no stopping me (naturally) of getting a glass myself… which really did end up being about 4 glasses worth, because of their generosity in coming over to us time and time again offering more of that bubbly. It was lovely.

It wasn’t before long that canape’s started popping out from every corner, and once again tapping the knowledge of our fellow blogger (foodie cravings), the catering came from Comestibles. There was a range of items from pumpkin, to duck, mushrooms (my personal favourite!), mini quiche (also a favourite!), and then to dessert that had mini meringues, lovely smooth chocolate flowing from the trays of the extremely friendly wait staff. It was a joy, really. They took the time to explain the name of each canape with such friendliness – truly commendable!

If you dream of having a boutique like Nespresso someday as well, online colleges have culinary arts classes

Not to forget, there were also beautiful cocktails towards the end of the night… Cherry cocktail that came with a nice coffee/chocolate stick, and of course, how can there be a Nespresso boutique opening, without the appropriate espresso martini! (: That was certainly the highlight for our fellow blogger Simon Says Eat because as he was talking to me, he saw the waitress come by with a fresh tray of espresso martini’s, and he immediately excused himself to grab another glass whilst we were in the middle of a conversation! But we’re food bloggers. We understand. (:

Enough blabber. Feast your eyes for now.

During the food service, we were also approached by one of the friendly staff to ask us if we were enjoying ourselves, and where we came from (i.e. we were food bloggers), and chatting along, we were then offered a Nespresso of our choice. Being silly and forgetting that it was about 7.30pm at night by then, I decided to order the strongest one they had to offer. Miss L had one with moderate strength.

We were served with the infamous Nespresso glasses. Lovely.

With that lovely food (and coffee), we were greeted by Renaud Tinei, the General Manager of Nespresso Oceania after a bit of mingling and a getting-to-know session with the fellow bloggers.

A great man with a good sense of humour, he told us how great it is to have a boutique opening in Perth, and I couldn’t agree more.

He explained the great indigenous artwork created from Nespresso pods, wonderfully cased and beautifully presented on your left  as you enter the boutique. The artwork is credited to the Jumbana Group, with all proceeds from this installation goes to the Indi Kindi, a group project by Jumba.

Before he ended the speech, he introduced the WA Aboriginal Dance Company who presented us with some great dancing and music.

This was certainly a wonderful experience, and it was even better meeting fellow food bloggers because there was this innate common ground with them that can be characterised by two things – camera, and the ability to talk about food for about 80% of the conversation!

I would certainly be urging those who haven’t gone to the boutique to pop in for a peek because it truly is a work of art, and whether you already own a machine of your own, or have one in the office where you can buy your own pods and utilise the machine, this place is worth the visit, just because it is well laid out!

I would personally be getting my Nespresso machine in the near future, and am excited about the variety of coffees I can have!

And to end this little narration, the combination of the strong Nespresso, espresso martini, cherry cocktail and Veuve proved to be rather whack. I ended up sleeping 2 hours, wake up for another 2, then sleeping for the final 3 hours before I had to drag myself out of bed the next day to continue my engineering profession!

A special thanks to Nespresso for inviting us, and a special shout out to those fellow bloggers whom we met, we are looking forward to a food bloggers’ meal!

Jean Pierre Sancho, Perth

Website: www.jpsancho.com.au

Jean Pierre Sancho is the first French boulangerie patisserie in Perth, located at the entrance of Shafto Lane on Hay Street.  I heard alot about it since its first opening but unfortunately have had no opportunity to visit the joint up till now just coz it’s so far away from my office.  However, recently we decided to make our way across the city to dine there having ran out of places to go to for lunch.

To me, the history behind the evolvement of Jean Pierre Sancho is quite special, having started as a modest bakery south of France in 1904 and passed on over three generations to become the Jean Pierre Sancho of today.  It is a legacy within the family! And everyone in Perth now can be part of that legacy, or at least have a taste of the legacy!

The place itself is very modern looking, with chic decors bordered with glass walls and an alfresco dining area, perfect setting for lunch this fine sunny afternoon.

For lunch, we ordered from their special ‘Formulas’ which consisted of:

  • Handmade Croissant and Fair Trade Organic Coffee – $6.50
  • Standard Sandwiches (choice of 6) with a standard drink - $10

and also not being able to resist the fine looking cakes at the counter, a Fraisier and Lemon Tart.

My friends had the Baguettes with Drinks and thought they were beautiful and were a good price.  I had the Croissant with the Long Mac - coffee was great, however the croissant was not as fresh as some I have tasted elsewhere.  (I went on a French Food Safari tour recently in Sydney organised by Gourmet Safaris and Maeve O’Meara, who was leading the tour brought us to this gorgeous French bistro patisserie Baroque and they make the most amazing croissant.  Maybe my tastebud had been spoilt with the freshness I tasted there).

I ordered a small lunch just so I could fit in a cake – they were all so pretty sitting on the counter, screaming to be ’picked’.  It didn’t disappoint, loved the creamy texture and smooth finish.  I must go back to try the others soon!  My friend who took away the Lemon Tart loved it as well.  It had certainly live up to its patisserie reputation!

Loved the service in this place, they were friendly and very efficient, and all spoke in a frenchy accent, even the non-French working there.  Awesome!  A place that you must try at least once (PS: I’m very biased towards patisserie, they are all in the must-try category :))

Twilight Hawkers, Perth

More Info, click HERE.

After hearing so much about the Twilight Hawkers Market from bloggers, and friends around, it was time for me to head down and check it out myself!

After some drinks at the Hula Bula bar, a colleague and myself went down to check this place out, and this was about 7-ish in the evening. With the event officially ending at about 8pm, I was honestly a bit concerned about the amount of food that I’d get to try, but after seeing how the place was still pretty crowded, I was quite relieved.

I was expecting a bigger area to be covered by the stalls, so I was a little surprised (and disappointed) to see the size of the event. Perhaps it’s because it is the first time this event was held.

We walked around and immediately sniffed out the curry and the satay. Onwards we went!!

I was really excited about the satay so I decided to head straight for that.

Knowing how hot it’d get when you’re actually cooking the satay on the special charcoal grill, I found myself appreciating the efforts that these people were taking to make us hungry jacks and jills happy and yummy in our tummy.

I was stoked to see that this stall, on top of selling their satay, had curry puffs and spring rolls for sale too! SCORE.

So we bought two serves of satay (5 sticks with sauce per serve) for $7 each, and the 2 spring rolls and 2 curry puffs. I can’t remember how much these little munchies were each but the 4 items totaled to $5.

The satay did not disappoint. That good old rattan fan did the work well! The sauce didn’t look like the usual type I’d get back in Singapore, but it tasted YUMMILICIOUS! With whole peanuts being crunched inside the mouth, that feeling was difficult to forget. The taste of the satay (chicken) was excellent too. Love.

The curry puffs and spring rolls were pretty average, but hey, that satay was just awesome.

We also had the dumplings that was just around the other side of the alley of food stalls. Being greedy we had the biggest serve that was selling at $10 for 7 pieces. There was a choice of chicken or pork, and we had a mix of both. Traditionally eaten with some chilli oil and vinegar, I didn’t waste any time in getting some of the packets available at the counter.
The dumplings were as what you’d expect from dumplings, but the fact that they remembered the supply of the vinegar and chilli oil added that extra edge that gave the dumplings the real kick!
I really wanted to try the Paella that I have heard so much about over the past couple of weeks from reading various blogs/reviews, but alas! I couldn’t find the stall. I suspected it was too late, so the aim is to get there quite a bit earlier this week to try it out!
We went onto to have some vegetarian gozleme… and we managed to jump the queue a little because the people in front of us were not keen on the vegetarian option.
I have always wanted to try this little dish but was never able to, so thank goodness for this Twilight Hawkers because I finally get to try something that I have been wanting to for… it’s gotta be years now!
I loved it for its nice salty cheesy flavour, with the added healthy serve of vegetables… but my partner in crime was not too keen and found it a tad too cheesy. So if you’re a cheesy person (no pun intended), this may just be the little snack for you!
We finished off the evening with some empanadas, and I was a tad sad that there was no guacamole left to eat with the cute little things – the roasted capsicum sauce was good, but I think the guacamole would have sealed the deal for me.
We had the pork and lime empanadas, which had a nice flavour, but was a bit light for my tastebuds (possibly because of the salty gozleme I had before). It was definitely well cooked tho’! I can still feel that crunch.
Overall, this was a great event initiated by the City of Perth. I loved the atmosphere (almost felt like home in one of those pasar malams!). I missed out on quite a number of stalls because of the time I got there, so I will endeavour to get there earlier this week, and if I am not mistaken, our dearest Miss L will be popping by too! A big special thank you’s to all the people who are behind the food created for this event – it is hard work, and there is no doubt it is really appreciated!
Review by: S.T. a.k.a Miss Egg

Miss L finally made it to the Twilight Market on the very last Friday night!
Phew, that was my first reaction when I finally arrived at the Twilight Market, I didn’t miss this most talked about event in the Eat Drink Perth Campaign!  March had been a busy month so I was glad I didn’t miss out on trying the delish food written about constantly by the Perth bloggers community since it started.
My strategy for the night was to check out all the stalls on offer and hone in on the stalls of interest (for efficiency purposes), and of course being photo snappy happy at the same time.
Some of the stalls seen at the Twilight Market (some photos may be double-ups of those taken by Miss Egg above):

There was a mad rush of people and long queues to get to the food especially the more popular stalls such as the Paella and Empanadas.  My mouth had been salivating ever since I saw pictures of the Paella ($10ea) on many other blogs so that was my first stop, and luckily so as we got the last few packs before it was sold out!  and all before 7pm!  My next stops were the Moroccan Chicken Bowl ($9.50) and the Empanadas (3 for $10).

The food didn’t disappoint for sure!  The Paella was topped to the brim with seafood (mussels, prawns and crabs).  What a bargain!  No wonder it got sold out so quickly!  The Moroccan Chicken Bowl came with cous cous and a side of bread which was very filling.  After the two dishes, I pretty much couldn’t eat anything else so I didn’t get to try the satays, gozmele or the dumplings :(.
My last dish was the Empanadas which were a big hit at the Twilight Market.  I first heard of this dish from Gloria in an episode of the Modern Family and the name got stuck in my head so it was quite exciting for me to try this out.  I thought the skin was very unique, crisp and slightly chewy and went really well with the guacomole dip.  I also found it was nicer to eat it fresh out from the fryer.  Yay, was glad I managed to try this dish!
Overall, I was very glad to see stalls of so many varying cuisine at the market – a great chance to try food of different nationalities that I normally wouldn’t visit a restaurant for.  I hope they make this a regular event!

Iku Sushi, Perth (Opening Party)

Website: www.ikusushi.com

Iku Sushi is a new Japanese restaurant which recently opened in the stylish one40william building in the City of Perth.  I was priviledged enough to score an invite to their opening party which took place late last month and managed to sample some goodies before they went public!  And now I have the pleasure in sharing this event on the PFE blog :)

Iku Sushi is located at the back of the 140 William building and faces William Street (the part which is still undergoing renovation) and is in close proximity to the train station.  The first thing you notice upon arrival is the funkiness (or maybe quirkiness) of the restaurant decor.  Check out the sign to the right!  ’Sushi Ninjas at Work’ – a promise of something fun!

Moving inside, one is not disappointed with the interior as it showcases the same funkiness as the outside – bright colours with matching seats, turn-table ornament and waitstaff dressed in ninja outfit.  Even the napkin is a cool picture of a tie!  They spare not the little details! Oh and not to forget, they also have a coffee machine! Yay!

And now to the food!  There were platters of sushi for the party and the ones that caught my eyes (and my mouth!) were the duck and the spam-filled ones!  They were yum and cool and very different!

Iku Sushi has a ‘pick and choose’ system with the sushis located in the refrigerated shelves on the side.  Basically, you pick up a tray at the start and choose the type of sushi or one of the bento combinations that you fancy and pay at the counter.  Prices are stated as well so you know exactly how much you need to pay!  Some creative drinks/desserts are available such as the ‘You had me at Jello’ Coca-cola or ribena flavoured jelly and a Iku Citron Presse.

Besides the sushis, hot food are available with the usual Donburi/Bento Sets - a screenshot of what’s available shown below.

The highlight of my night – foodwise and also of the restaurant is the Cheeseburger Sushi!  No, you have not read wrong – yes, it is indeed a Cheeseburger Sushi!  Cheeseburger (beef or chicken) filling wrapped as a sushi, covered with tempura batter and deep fried, served with something like a thousand island sauce!  Awesome! It was so yummy!  I couldn’t get enough of it!  And not to forget the Panko Onion Rings too!  Super crunchy onion rings served with mayonnaise sauce!

The Cheeseburger Sushi set costs $7.50 (6 pieces) and the Panko Onion Rings ($4.95)

I was a happy chappy by the end of the party!  Check out the new restaurant if you are ever in the vicinity and especially the Cheeseburger Sushi!  You won’t regret it!

Andaluz, Perth

Website: http://www.andaluzbar.com.au/

So the girlfriends and myself decided we should try one of the most talked about Tapas bar in Perth, Andaluz before I flew off on my big trip. Didn’t really know what to expect but just reading the menu, I was definitely excited to see what this place had to offer. :)

This place is situated along Howard Street in the city. For those who know where the Greenhouse is, it’s directly opposite, and on the right hand side facing the Esplanade. Quite easily missed by the unsuspecting eye, so keep a lookout!

As I entered the venue that evening, I had this really good classy elegant vibe from the place, and why not with all the beautiful decor and the rustic but yet vintage feel of the place, I was already impressed (not that difficult to impress this simple girl).

We all needed a nice little cocktail to start us off. Apologies for not being able to remember the names, but here are some photos (to those bartenders reading, if you can help me out, that’d be wonderful!) :

All three cocktails were beautiful, and was a nice way to start the evening for sure. They were all wonderful concoctions.

Being the crazy ladies we were, we decided to also order a bottle of the Petit Chablis… carefully chosen by our dearest D.P. Lovely bottle of wine – so easy to drink it was actually dangerous!

So moving on from the drinks… let’s see what we had for dinner:

- New Norcia Bread, olive oil and balsamic

- Flash fried whole school prawns, paprika aioli (and we were only interested because of the aioli!)

- Black angus beef carpaccio, machego and herbs, hazelnut dressing

- Seared scallops, Berkshire pork cheek confit, sticky alvear PX and muscatels

- Slow cooked octopus, shallots, preserved lemon and chilli

- House smoked ocean trout, labna, vanilla, apple and horseradish

- Smoked Cod, Egg and Morcilla Croquettes

I will stop here before the desserts, because there is already so many to talk about!

The bread was actually a way of filling my tummy up because I was really hungry that evening, and I needed to be considerate of my other dining mates (wouldn’t want to deprive them of the good food!).

The prawns was actually such a nice nibbler that it finished before we even could say supercalifragilisticexpialidocious! Okay, so I lie, but it was just one of those nice things to munch on whilst having a good chat with mates. The paprika aioli wasn’t too bad, tho’ I thought a little more paprika wouldn’t hurt. =)

The carpaccio was lovely. But I maybe biased because I am a big fan of it. Served beautifully, we had an equal share each, which was great!

The scallops were the highlight for us over the range of tapas we ordered. that melt-in-your-mouth sensation of the pork cheeks, coupled with the sheer chewiness of the scallops seared to perfection – Oooh la la! Sexy dish. Sexy.

The octopus was rather tasty and provided a nice change to the smoked/fried/cured food that we ordered.

The smoked trout was beautiful with the radish – amazing combination of flavours really. I was a bit wary of how it might would taste like, but hey, the proof is in the pudding, and the pudding delivered!

The croquettes had a taste that was on the stronger/heavier side, but nothing too overwhelming, which is good. The fact that they had morcilla (i.e. black pudding) in there was probably one of the reasons behind the heaviness of the dish. Overall, I’m glad I tried it.

Just like everyone else, we all have various taste buds, and my personal favourites for the evening were the prawns, smoked trout and scallops. Don’t get me wrong tho’, the rest were lovely too. Just that these three tapas dishes left a deep impression without a doubt.

So you thought we were done. Where is dessert?!

There were four desserts on special, and we decided to have one each since there were four of us anyway. How perfect!

Once again, my lovely memory has failed me for two of the desserts. one of them the chocolate dessert, the other (from what I can recall), a semifreddo with pistachio biscotti (a big one!). The other two were a lemon tart, and a ice cream cookie with caramel milkshake!

My personal favourite, oddly enough was the lemon tart. The simplest of them all. But the thing about this lemon tart was that it was such a simple dessert but it tasted so exquisite. I couldn’t stop feeding myself. By far the best lemon tart I have tasted. =)

The others were good too, with special credit to the idea of the caramel milkshake being put in a little milk bottle! We found the whole idea ingenious. The chocolate dessert and semifreddo were on par for me. Good stuff.

If you think you’re going to keep ordering food/drinks over the duration of your stay, just ask the friendly (and they were very friendly indeed!) wait staff for a tab card, in which you exchange with your credit card for. Lovely system I say!

We ate all of the above and drank everything for about $60 each, which is probably worth the moolah because of the food quality. I will definitely be heading back to Andaluz in the near future!

Those sexy scallops……….

44 King Street, Perth

44 King Street is located in the chicest laneway in Perth, opposite boutiques such as the Empire Rose, Tiffany& Co, Kookai, etc to name a few.  I’d always thought it was called the King Street Cafe and only found out its real name writing this article – how ignorant of me.  This is my second time dining here and contrary to popular reviews, I did not like the food too much the first time, hence the infrequent visit to this cafe.  Since I haven’t reviewed this place in the blog, I’d thought I give it a second go one afternoon whilst looking for a place to lunch.

44 King Street, upmarket, rustic, charming, busy – these description pretty much sum up  my thoughts of the place.  I like the comfortable ambience, with its open windows and open kitchen setting, one can get settled in quite easily. Lunch time is a bustling affair and tables get filled up quickly so be there early to avoid the mad lunchtime rush!

For lunch, we had the following:

  • San Pallegrino Limonata
  • Crispy King Prawn Spring Rolls, Vermicelli Noodle Salad – $22.90
  • Caesar Salad with Candied Bacon - $19.90
  • Special Salad of the Day (can’t remember what this is called but price range is approx $20)

The Limonata was refreshing on this sunny day and the surprise came with the Crispy King Prawy Spring Rolls I ordered – it’s so SMALL!  Judging by the price, I’d thought it would be a medium sized dish but was sorely disappointed!  The vermicellie noodle salad was measly too.  However it tasted nice, the spring roll itself was filled to the brim with ingredients – it would have been good as an entree.  The other dishes (both salads) were quite small in serving too!  We were all quite hungry after the meal :(.

Overall, I was not too impressed with the serving of the dishes.  The non-salad dishes are priced from $30 – $50 which I thought was pricey for a casual lunch.  We were also unfortunate that day to be served by a moodywaiter, he looked like he would rather be some place else.  So this second time experience was not a good one for me either, might not be so quick to go back the third time.

Hydrant on Hay, Perth

***City of Perth EAT DRINK PERTH March 2011 Special Offer!***

For $20, choose a dish from the all-day-menu plus enjoy a middy of beer or a glass of wine.  Available Mon – Fri, 1130am - 2pm only.

 *********************************************************************************

Hydrant on Hay sits directly opposite what was the old Perth Fire Station… and no prizes for guessing why it’s called Hydrant.

It’s always been one of those places we’d walk by from our office into the city without really catching a second glance, but having dined there on two separate occasions, we realised that this place has a bit more to offer than what one would think!

So the PFE’s actually came here twice… the first time, it was just Miss Egg and Miss Anise, and the second time, the whole PFE gang was around!!

One thing that Miss Egg really love is the wide wide bar area. She loves. :)

The other thing… strange but somehow attractive to her, is the flavoured water! The management was smart enough to use various fruits to flavour the water. So think lemon. Think apple. Think herbs. yes. Herbs. I cannot remember what it was exactly, but it was a nice change!

As with other casual dining cafe’s in Perth, you have a look at the menu and order at the counter. Funny thing is that the menu is at the counter, so that doesn’t give you much time at all to deliberate on what you want.

So over the two occasions, we had:

  • Smoked Salmon Caesar’s Salad
  • Chicken Caesar’s Salad (so we do like the man’s salad – is that a crime?)
  • Steak Sandwich
  • Lasagna
  • Special of the Day

The Caesar’s Salad at Hydrant aren’t too bad, except for the fact that the Smoked Salmon version was at least 2 times better than the chicken, and it’s not just because of the smoked salmon. It’s the fact that it was well tossed, and the chicken caesar that I got the second time came without the croutons! What a big disappointment. The oddest thing is how I never noticed it till someone pointed it out later. HMM. Maybe I was just too hungry.

The steak sandwich was definitely well received by my very own personal steak sandwich connoisseur (whom at one stage did mention that he wanted to be a guest blogger!)… and the looks did give it away to a certain extent. I have definitely tasted better chips, but hey, the main star attraction is that cow within the bread, so if that’s a go, I think it’s worth a try!

Miss Anise had tried the Lasagna the second time we went there, and whilst the plate does appear to be rather empty with the salad in the bowl (hello feta!!!)… it did fill Miss Anise up, and I believe the salad was of good greens (it had the not-so-usual olives and feta, both of which I’m quite a fan of!).

The taste of the Lasagna was apparently okay – definitely not the best around, but it wasn’t that shabby either.

I think given a choice, we wouldn’t really order this dish again. ;)

I find it difficult to explain the Special of the day, but it was such a heavy meal that I felt quite sick at the end of it. That said, if it was served at half the portion - why not?! :) It was tasty and the combination, although a tad weird, had all the things I so love. From unhealthy bacon, to wonderful rocket. Yummmm. The hollandaise sauce that accompanied the dish wasn’t the best choice, but the rest of the ingredients made up for it.

Being on the other side of the city (what I’d really like to call the boring side…)… Hydrant on Hay is definitely something I’d class as underrated, especially when it serves decently good food, and rather reasonable prices.

I wouldn’t mind going back for a meal, and with a nice bar, why not?? :)

C Restaurant (High Tea), Perth

Website: http://www.crestaurant.com.au/

Entertainment Book 10/11: 25% off total bill (up to $45)

So it was a friend’s Hen’s party this nice sunny Sunday afternoon, and A.C and myself got there rather early (well, we thought we were late but ended up being the first to arrive!).

When we walked in, we were greeted by a less-than-enthusiastic staff, who didn’t even bother greeting us. So never mind that, our mood was still in the right place. We were walked to our table, in which everything was forgotten after looking at that spectacular view of good ol’ Perth. I had been to the C before for both lunch and dinner, and I have to say, the afternoons are always a better time slot for this venue – more to see, and more to appreciate as the sun gazes over our rather small city.

Just a bit of history on my experience with C:

Having been here for both lunch and dinner, I have to say I have been left just a tad unimpressed with both. The lunch was a tad better than the dinner I had, but it is definitely not worth the moolah if you were going to expect something top of this world (the irony).

Anyhow, on with the high tea!

So there are three different sorts of high tea available:

  • High Tea ($37) – Range of usual high tea goodies and bottomless cup of tea/coffee as you please
  • Sparkling High Tea ($48) – All of the above in High Tea plus ONE glass of sparkling wine
  • Champagne High Tea ($59) – All of the above in High Tea plus ONE glass of champagne

I have to admit I thought it was a rip off to be paying an additional $11 and $22 for just one glass of sparkling wine/champagne, perhaps it was of the highest grade, but still. One glass? Hmm. Food for thought.

Anyhoo, we had the standard High Tea, and the waitress took our order. Rather patient with our deliberation, this staff member was far more in tune with her duties than her supervisor/manager who walked us in. I had the peppermint/lemongass tea, and the other ladies had green tea, ice tea, and some earl grey. No one had the coffee.

The tea was all served in individual pots, and it reminded me of myself in a Chinese restaurant because the teapots were those typical of any Chinese/Asian restaurant you’d pop into.

Not long after, the food arrived, and we were served:

Three tiers, and a plate of quiche and cheesy palmiers.

I have to admit that I was expecting a tad more than what was served, but it was sufficient in the end to fill all of us up.

The little petit fours on the top tier were ordinary, and actually a tad disappointing, considering the standard they are claiming themselves to be of. The scones on the other hand were delightful – the ones I had were warm, and they had a nice texture. The cream could have been better but the scones did make up for that shortfall. As for the sandwiches – another ordinary set of munch. I fail to understand the type of bread they used to serve (it felt as though it was one of those typical Coles/Woolworths loaves that they got a special discount on. That said, the fillings were not too bad.

The quiche was not up to scratch. I am not a quiche person, so it takes quite a bit to impress me, and this did not. The cheesy palmiers on the other hand were lovely.

The one thing we were not too happy about was the fact that the staff were not attentive enough to our tea. We had to repeatedly ask them to give us a refill before they finally did, about 10 minutes after asking.

The food was average, but since this is my first high tea in Perth, I can’t say too much. Hailing from Singapore, this was absolutely nothing compared to where I come from. But the ambiance was definitely good. The view spectacular like I said.

The service was one word:

Disappointing

I would go back again, given the discount in the entertainment book, but I wouldn’t go back otherwise. Furthermore, with the uprising high tea scene in WA, there would be no need. :)

Country Road Cafe, Perth

Country Road Cafe, located inside the Country Road clothing store on Murray Street is a cafe that encompasses the best of both the shopping and eating world.  Tired after shopping?  Turn around, make your way to the back of the store and you will find a busy little cafe, perfect for the afternoon nibbles or drinks.  I’d discovered this place through a friend a few years back and have been loving it since.

It is a smallish cafe and gets very busy during lunch time so booking is definitely recommended.  Once a booking is made, your name is written on the table along with the time of arrival.  You are then able to stake your claim on the table when you arrive without even waiting or talking to the waitstaff.  A good and efficient system!

The cafe started out quite small in size, but have steadily expanded over the years with even a conversion of their back room into a dining area (not sure what the room was used before but I’m pretty sure it wasn’t part of the cafe).  All the better for us!  It now consists of an alfresco area with huge black umbrellas as shades and an interior area with either a normal table-wooden seats,  booth like-sofa seats or hi-table-stools settings.  My favourite is the alfresco area on a warm sunny day – love the ray of sunlight shining through the shades.  Such great ambience!

The lunch menu is written on a glass pane next to the counter and consists of salads, sandwiches, pies, nachos, rice and many more.  Not too many varieties, however they are quite innovative with their dishes – the chefs seemed to have jazz the dishes up with different uncommon ingredients.  I like!  The dishes come in entree or main sizes and orders are placed and paid at the counter.

For lunch, we had:

  • Chickpea and roasted vegetable salad with lemon and herb dressing ($14.50)
  • 2 x Caesar salad, Country Road style with chicken ($14.50)
  • Special juice of the day – Sunrise ($4.50)

I had the Caesar Salad for lunch that day and it was the best Caesar Salad I have eaten in Perth so far!  It spoils the caesar salads around other places for me as I always compare them with this and they normally don’t come up to scratch!  The Country Road styled Caesar Salad is filled with different veggies (a plus for me) – onions, sundried tomatoes, red cabbabe, snow pea sprout and many more.  The combination of different spices with the sauce is divine!  It also comes with two slices of toasted turkish bread, just the right amount to fill you up without pushing you over the limit.  It’s such a great dish, I can’t stop going on about it.  I only ever order this dish now everytime I eat here!  A must try!

The juice of the day, Sunrise was a concoction of watermelon, orange, pineapple and passionfruit juice – freshly squeezed, was very refreshing and a perfect complement to the salad.  Worth an order!

(Note: I was too engrossed in my Caesar Salad to ask about the Chickpea & Roasted Vegetable Salad - so no feedback on this *sheepish look*)

Service was average and not too noticeable as we didn’t have much contact with the waitstaff except at the counter and them bringing out/clearing the dishes.  However, with its great ambience and Caesar Salad, I will be back again and again!  For those who doesn’t know about this gem of a cafe, check out this idyllic hideaway if you are ever in the vicinity!
